Post #7 Response to "The Veldt" (hard copy available from Ms. P or read online)

What about this short story?  Unbelievable, right?
A family lives in an automated house called "The Happylife Home," filled with machines that do everything for them from cooking meals, to clothing them, to rocking them to sleep. The two children become fascinated with the "nursery", a virtual reality room that is able to connect with the children telepathically to reproduce any place they imagine. Sounds utopian, right?  Keep reading. . .

Now, for this post, I want you to reflect on this utopian story, the themes, and a few quotes.  Choose ONE of the themes and reflect AND choose ONE of the quotes and reflect.

  • Appreciate the simple joys of life

  • Don't let yourself get carried away

Quotes (choose one and respond)
  • "That sounds dreadful! Would I have to tie my own shoe instead of letting the shoe tier do it? And brush my own teeth and comb my hair and give myself a bath?"
  • "Matter of fact, we're thinking of turning the whole house off for about a month. Live sort of a carefree one-for-all existence"
  •  "I don't want to do anything but look and listen and smell; what else is there to do?"
