Rename island

Now, you may go back to the beginning - revisit each of your 10 posts- based on your ideas, create a name befitting for your utopian island.  For this final post- repost a picture of your island with its new name.  Offer a complete explanation of what your blog represents- a class assignment to develop a utopian island community.  Include an invitation for only those persons that you send an email to -to read and offer constructive criticism for your entire plan.  We will have time next week to review those comments and edit our posts before finalizing for competition.  I hope you continue to edit and revise your plans for improvement until the official deadline (which I will post next week).  Thanks for your hard work!

Post #7 Response to "The Veldt" (hard copy available from Ms. P or read online)

What about this short story?  Unbelievable, right?
A family lives in an automated house called "The Happylife Home," filled with machines that do everything for them from cooking meals, to clothing them, to rocking them to sleep. The two children become fascinated with the "nursery", a virtual reality room that is able to connect with the children telepathically to reproduce any place they imagine. Sounds utopian, right?  Keep reading. . .

Now, for this post, I want you to reflect on this utopian story, the themes, and a few quotes.  Choose ONE of the themes and reflect AND choose ONE of the quotes and reflect.

Go to :  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_esYONwdKuw
Watch and listen as you answer this post!

Themes (choose one and respond)
  •  More is not always better

  • Appreciate the simple joys of life

  • Don't let yourself get carried away

Quotes (choose one and respond)
  • "That sounds dreadful! Would I have to tie my own shoe instead of letting the shoe tier do it? And brush my own teeth and comb my hair and give myself a bath?"
  • "Matter of fact, we're thinking of turning the whole house off for about a month. Live sort of a carefree one-for-all existence"
  •  "I don't want to do anything but look and listen and smell; what else is there to do?"

POST #6-Think about the perfect climate and geographical features. Are you an island paradise? Or are you nestled in the snow-covered mountains? Are you isolated from everyone else? If so, are you making plans to be self-sufficient? Where do you get your energy from? Would you have some form of protection from others- a wall? Include specific information about your physical layout. Include photos or designs for architectural elements on your island (government buildings, houses, transportation ports, etc.)
Dubai was a complete desert in 1990; look at it today!

BE CREATIVE- a career in architecture may await you!
